WHY I'M RUNNING

I am running for NC State Senate because I believe in the power of public service to improve people's lives. Too often, powerful outside groups team up with elected officials to override the issues people really care about, such as good public education, local economic development and reproductive freedom. As a lawyer practicing 37 years in the courts of this district, I have seen firsthand the struggles faced by local families and small businesses. I am determined to represent the taxpayers of northeastern North Carolina in the General Assembly, and not be the rubber stamp of shadowy outside financial interests.

I am ready to serve and work tirelessly to build a better future for all North Carolinians. Together, let's create a prosperous, innovative and competitive state.

For 37 years, I have represented families and businesses in the courts of northeastern North Carolina, and founded my own firm in Nags Head. My husband, Bob Scott, and I have been married for 43 years. He owns a Dare County small business in the boat building industry. We have two grown daughters and two grandsons who are also North Carolinians.

A STRONG VISION FOR EASTERN NC

  • Susan Harman-Scott believes that women are entitled to make their own healthcare decisions without government intrusion. She is a strong advocate for common-sense reproductive rights and will preserve women's autonomy and restrict government interference with private medical decisions.

  • Committed to fostering vibrant, sustainable communities, Susan Harman-Scott will advocate for investment in housing, modern infrastructure, and innovative business to boost the local economy, attract new businesses, create good-paying jobs, and allow the economy to grow and prosper.

  • For many years our local public school system has been under attack by the NC General Assembly. Destructive policies and a notorious lack of funding have undermined the mission and effectiveness of our schools. Susan Harman-Scott will focus on improving the quality of our public schools by restoring lost funding, treating our teachers like the professionals they are and prioritizing the success and well-being of students.

  • The Republicans in the NC General Assembly have slashed income tax rates for multinational corporations and wealthy taxpayers at the expense of small business owners and working families. While income taxes have been decreased across the board, small business owners and families are paying more in sales taxes and hidden fees. The result is that average citizens are being taxed at a higher rate and the ultra-wealthy and global corporations are taxed at a lesser rate.  Susan will fight to reverse these unfair policies.
